Parliament’s Cultural Commission has called on the state broadcaster to air content designed to combat “nudity.” Ahmad Rastineh, the commission’s spokesperson, said: “Members of this commission have demanded the implementation of content-driven, advocacy-oriented programs to combat ‘nudity’ on the Islamic Republic’s radio and television.” He added that commission members stated: “The national broadcaster must perform properly in promoting Iranian-Islamic culture and identity and in confronting nudity.”
As the saying goes, “Not even a truck could carry this nonsense.” After the campaign against “improper hijab,” which provoked a counter-response from women, it became the turn of “no hijab,” and here too, despite spilling blood across society, the Islamic Republic took a stinging slap from women and the people at large and, reeling, remembered that “no hijab” also cannot arouse the zeal of the Islamic government, its thugs, and its paid lackeys.
Well then—after all that scheming and threatening (“we’ll deploy 80,000 enforcers of the good”), a voice from within the regime conceded that even 80,000 is nothing: “Even if you bring 8 million people into the field, you won’t be able to bring hijab back.” (Former Tehran mayor Gholamhossein Karbaschi’s criticism of the hijab “situation room”: “Even with 8 million forces, it won’t make a difference!”)
The next act is now “combating nudity.” In global culture, nudity means stark nakedness—literally not even wearing underwear—as when, say, on Spanish beaches or in German saunas men and women appear completely nude. They have stapled this definition of nudity onto “no hijab,” thinking they can now use it as a pretext to intimidate and suppress women; imagining that in this way they can arouse the “zeal” of “valiant Iranian and Islamic men” to stop unveiled women. With pride, I hereby proclaim the center of the three “B”s: B as in bad-hijabi (improper veiling) — B as in bi-hijabi (no veiling) — B as in meyl-e barhengi (a tendency toward nudity).
