Human Rights Day on 10 December is approaching. We mark it this year in the wake of the 25 November International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, during which street actions were held across the world – especially in Iran. On that day, numerous messages from women’s and children’s rights activists – from the streets to inside prisons -were published, and organisations representing women, students, teachers and workers issued a series of statements reiterating their demands: defending equal rights, resisting gender apartheid and calling for the release of political prisoners such as Anisha Asadollahi, Golrokh Iraee, Risheh Moradi and Fariba Kamalabadi.
Today, the demand for equal human and civil rights – aligned with the most progressive standards of a modern, twenty-first-century society and free from discrimination based on race, ethnicity, religion or gender – is one of the fundamental aspirations of people everywhere, and particularly of Iranians. Unconditional political freedoms, the right to choose one’s clothing, freedom of religion and of non-belief, and the right to a life of dignity befitting contemporary humanity – these are shared demands of the young generation and of the women and men who continue to raise the banner of the revolutionary “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement.
On the eve of Human Rights Day, it is our duty to be the voice of Iran’s political and ideological prisoners by all means possible. We must stand alongside their families in the streets and demand their unconditional release. We must keep alive the names and ideals of those killed for freedom, protest against the current wave of executions and join the “Tuesdays Against Executions” movement in defence of the fundamental right to life.
We must also stand more firmly against gender apartheid and the structures of violence imposed on women. It is essential to strengthen the movement against mandatory Islamic veiling and gender segregation, and to rise up against all forms of discrimination and oppression targeting women and other social groups.
People must have the right to clean air, a protected and rehabilitated environment, and freedom from the vast ecological destruction inflicted on Iran by the Islamic Republic. We must defend people’s right to live in safety, joy, welfare and dignity; be the voice of child labourers and all children whose rights are being violated; and ultimately hold governments accountable for their international obligations concerning human rights abuses and crimes committed in Iran.
